Cyber thief extorts Rs 5 lakhs from a professor over a fake call

Even though authorities have been asking not to reply to messages from unknown mobile numbers, a professor responded to a message that his SIM card would be blocked within 23 hours. Then he contacted the number and lost Rs 4.90 lakh. (Pune Cyber Crime)

 

In this case, a 53-year-old professor living in Sadashiv Peth, Pune has filed a complaint at the Vishrambaug Police Station. A message was received on his mobile phone telling him that his Jio sim card would be blocked in 24 hours. Then he contacted the given number for pending sim card verification. Accordingly, he contacted the number. Then the accused on the phone asked him to open the Jio app and do a recharge of Rs. 10 through netbanking and keep the phone on standby. Professor believed it and did a recharge of Rs 10 and put the phone on hold without turning it off. After putting the phone on hold, he logged into the bank account and checked the bank balance. The amount in his account was full by then. So he was talking to the person on the phone. Later, he got an OTP. And Rs. 4.90 lakh were debited from his State Bank of India account.

 

Vishrambagh police are investigating further.
