A 93-year-old Maharashtrian sculptor has created the world’s tallest statue

NPNEWS24 ONLINE- The nationwide discussion is going on about the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue of Unity, known as the world’s tallest statue. On the occasion of Patel’s birth anniversary, there is the opening of the 182-meter high statue on Wednesday.  This statue has twice height than the Statue of Liberty, and it will give a new identity to India like the country which has the highest statue in the world. But very few people know about the person who is behind the building such a gigantic statue.

A 93-year-old man- Ram Sutar who is the architect of the statue of Vallabhbhai Patel. Ram Sutar was born in a poor family at Gondur village of Dhule. He has created many famous sculptures. Now, the world’s tallest statue also added in his list.

Ram Sutar is one of those who made historical monuments of after independence. So, there are some special things about Ram Sutar, who won the Tagore award in 2016…

Ø  On February 19 1925, Ram Sudar was born in Gondur village of Dhule, Maharashtra.

Ø  He completed his education from Mumbai’s JJ School of Art.

Ø  He make small repairs of Ajanta-Ellora sculptures.

Ø  Ram Sutar, a 93-year-old man has opened studio independently from 1960.

Ø  He has made many like Maulana Azad (18 feet), Indira Gandhi (17 feet), Rajiv Gandhi (12 ft), Govindvallabh Pant (10 ft) and Jagjivan Ram (9 feet) in the premises of Parliament House.

Ø  He has created many sculptures of great personalities including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Ø  His sculptures are standing in France, Italy, Argentina, Russia and England also.

Ø  Rabindranath Tagore’s statue of Tokyo is also made  by Ram Sutar.

Ø  A Maharashtrian Ram Sutar, who is from the Dhule district, who lived in Delhi for the last half-century, is proud of all Maharashtrians.  

Ø  Recently, he was awarded the Tagore award in 2016 by the Central Cultural Ministry.  One crore rupees, a certificate and a traditional handicraft sculpture are the forms of this award.
