21-year-old dies after drowning in lake near Rajmachi fort

Pune: A 21-year-old youth who had come to Rajmachi for a mountaineering camp drowned and died in a lake near the fort on February 13, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Kaushik Iyer (21), resident of Thakurli, Dombivali, Thane, was attending a mountaineering camp organised at Rajmachi fort.

According to the police, a mountaineering camp organised by the Shiv Sahyadri Trekkers in Dombivali was attended by 100-150 people. Some of the youngsters in the group went for a swim in the pool at the foot of the fort, including Kaushik.

Reportedly, Kaushik dived into the lake but for a long time did not come out. His friends became suspicious and started searching for him. Upon not getting any response, they reported the incident at Kamshet police station.

Assistant Police Inspector Praful Kadam of Kamshet police station, police constables Mahesh Daundkar, Mahendra Walunjkar and Mithun Zende rushed to the spot upon receiving information. The police with help of the villagers recovered Kaushik’s body on Sunday.
