Strong Earthquake of 5.9 Magnitude Shook the Eastern Indonesia

Jakarta : A strong earthquake of 5.9 magnitude occurred on Wednesday in the remote part of eastern Indonesia. However, tsunami warnings have not been issued. This information was given in the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred in the archipelago at a distance of about 280 km southwest of the town of Tual in Maluku province and at a depth of 61 km of the sea. Indonesia had a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 2018 and thereafter a tsunami struck the Palu of Sulawesi island. More than 4,300 people were either killed or missing.

Earlier, seven people were killed and 23 others were injured in the Yogyakarta province of Indonesia. The National Disaster Agency had reported that the incident occurred when 249 students of a school’s scout club were tracking near a river and at the same time due to heavy rains, the water flow suddenly intensified in the river.

Significantly, floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in January killed about 70 people in the capital Jakarta and its surrounding areas, while thousands were forced to evacuate the shelter.
