Same-Sex: Gave birth to a baby out of #377

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – No we are not talking about the humans we are talking about the penguins from Australia who have given birth to the baby out of sex from the same gender.

Magic and Sphen, two male penguins who built a nest and fostered an egg together in Sydney Aquarium, welcomed a yet-to-be-named chick into the world last Friday. The baby Gentoo penguin was announced on the Aquarium’s social media in a post littered with emojis.

‘Baby Sphengic has already stolen our hearts!’ Tish Hannan, Penguin Department Supervisor at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium says.

‘We love watching the proud parents doting and taking turns caring for their baby chick.’

‘With that said, the first 20 days of a penguin chick’s life are the most vulnerable so it is extra important the chick is very happy, healthy and well fed by his parents.

Swapping duties daily, while one of the parents are doing their best to incubate the egg, the other is patrolling the perimeters of the nest, warding off any potential pebble thieves or over-inquisitive neighbours.

To ensure the couple was not excluded from the season, Magic and Sphen were given a dummy egg to allow them to practice incubating, and after displaying natural skills and great excitement caring for their egg, the dummy was swapped with a real egg.

The unnamed chick hatched on Friday, October 19 at 5:46 pm weighing a grand total of 91 grams, but its gender won’t be determined for two months.

The parents captivated the attention of the globe after passing the test of a dummy egg a fortnight ago.

The fathers took turns incubating and protecting the fake egg, proving they were ready for the real deal. The chick will now stay with its dads for the first five weeks of his life where they will feed it as many as 10 times a day.The parents captivated the attention of the globe after passing the test of a dummy egg a fortnight ago.

Eventually, the parents will have to teach it to swim and build a nest for itself, but that’s still a few weeks away. The penguins’ enclosure is open to the public from Friday, with the chick burrowing into its fathers’ feathers for a few weeks until it gets fully healthy.
