Relief for Puneites as no water cut planned at present

Pune :  NpNews24 Online  – Pune PMC Water Supply | No decision about water cut has been taken in the meeting between the Water Resources Department and PMC’s Water Supply Department. Hence, for the time being, Puneites have been spared of a water cut. A decision about water cut may be taken in the meeting of the canal committee to be attended by Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil. (Pune PMC Water Supply)

There is 12.5 TMC water in the Khadakwasla reservoir system which supplies water to Pune city. There is no difference from last year’s situation. The Water Resources Department needs five TMC water for agriculture purpose and Pune city needs seven TMC water for its requirement. The summer season will end after 45 days and during this period, the rate of evaporation is higher. It is estimated that there will be evaporation of two TMC water. Hence, the Water Resources Department has issued instructions that the PMC should water judiciously, said Engineer of PMC’s Water Supply Department Aniruddha Pawaskar.

Information about measures being taken by the PMC to plug the leakages was given during the meeting between Water Resources Department and PMC’s Water Supply Department. The PMC is using a modern sensor system to find the areas from where the leakage takes place on an experimental basis. From the Vadgaon water centre to the Kedareshwar water tank at Katraj, leakage has been found at 13 places. The work of plugging the leakage was taken up immediately. In a similar manner, leakage spots of the main pipeline will be located and they will be plugged. The use of the technology will have to done at night because of noise and other reasons, suitable findings are not available, during the day.

The PMC had installed a 12 km water pipeline from Khadakwasla to Parvati water centre but the pipeline has rusted. At some places, painting will have to be done. The PMC had floated three tenders for this work but they did not elicit a response. Hence, after starting the repair work of the pipeline, the PMC is lifting 3,000 MLD water every day from the canal. Since less quantity of water is being released from the canal, it can have an effect on the water supply. Hence, the Water Resources Department has made a suggestion that the repairs and painting work of the pipeline should be carried after October.

The PMC has started taking action against misuse of water by washing centres and at construction sites. Some builders have started using treated waste water. Washing centre owners have been issued instructions by the civic body. Water taps of those violating the orders have been cut. At the same time, no new water taps are being given during the summer.
