The trio can do about 10,200 sample tests daily. Two laboratories are outside the National Capital Region (NCR). Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) officials say such laboratories are either using single machines or may use multiple machines to increase test capability. The future plan is to test 10 lakh samples a day using such technology.

On Saturday, 4,42,263 samples were tested in the country with 1,62,91,331 tests of Corona in the country so far. Member of the Policy Commission, Dr. V.K. National Institute of Reproductive Health (NIRRH) in Mumbai, National Institute of Cholera and Kolkata Enteric Disease (NICED) and National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research NICPR) in Noida.

NIRRH has installed COBAS 6800 machines in Mumbai. These imported machines manufactured by the Swiss company can test 1,200 samples a day, thus significantly reducing the time and backlog taken in the test. The price of each COBAS 6800 machine is about Rs 3.7 crore.

Currently, two COBAS machines are installed in the country – one at AIIMS, New Delhi, and the other at the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), which is in the national capital.

NICED Kolkata’s high level laboratory COBAS 8800 is equipped with machines that can test 3,000 samples in a day. Each machine costs around Rs 5.7 crore. The laboratory has been developed to enhance the infrastructure for tests in the eastern part of the country.

Noida’s lab is equipped with 12 RT-PCR machines and four automated RNA extractors. It is expected to conduct 6,000 samples a day. India has ordered eight Corona test machines from the Swiss company.
