Rajasthan woman violated by former husband’s brother in front of current husband, three arrested

A woman was allegedly raped by the brother of a man she had married and later left in Rajasthan’s Baran district, police said on Monday.

According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday when the woman and her husband were on their way back home from the Balaji temple in Baran on a motorcycle. The five accused intercepted the couple on the Baran-Atru state highway and forcibly took them to a field in the vicinity. The accused then allegedly tied the woman’s husband and then sexually assaulted her.

The former brother-in-law and two of his accomplices were detained on Sunday, he said.

According to the police, the woman, who was in her twenties, had abandoned her first husband after she was not able to have a child. The woman remarried through ‘Nata Pratha’, a practice that grants a marital relationship without any wedding ceremony.

The accused fled from the scene following which woman along with her child and sister managed to get to the main road and sought help.

The police have registered a complaint against five people for kidnapping and gang-rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Atru Station House Officer Ramkishan said the victim’s medical examination was conducted on Sunday and her statement was recorded before a magistrate on Monday. Search for the other accused are on, he added.
