Pune to give drinking water to Kerala Flooded regions

The state of Kerala is flooded from last few days, some parts of Kerala’s commercial capital, Cochin, are still underwater as well as snarled up roads and leaving railways across the state impassable. Due to all these, there is shortage of drinking water in the state. Thus, under the direction of Railway Ministry, 7 lakh liters of water will be transported to Kerala from Pune via railways.

Kerala which is facing the flood of the century is getting supported from other states of the country as well. It is normal for Kerala to get some of the country’s highest rainfall during monsoon season, but the Indian Meteorological Department said it had been hit with 37% more than usual because of a spell of low pressure over the region. Further downpours are forecasted for the weekend, due to which many are scared that the situation may get worse.

The Railways have provided 1,20,000 water bottles. Another 1,20,000 bottles are ready to be dispatched. It is also running a special train carrying 2.9 lakh liters of drinking water that will reach Kayakulam on Saturday.

As the rescue operation continues, the number of casualties are increasing. So far 324 people have died and two lakh people have lost their home overnight. Earlier, in 1924, the same kind of situation of the flood had occurred.
All the drinking water resources have been infected due to flood, so RO filter worth 2.5 Crore have been instructed to be sent by the Chief Minister of Telangana K. Chandrashekhar Rao. The central government has also granted 100 crore rupees of help.

The Kerala government has been advised to explore the use of V-SAT communication links in areas where telephone connectivity has been disrupted.
