Pune Rains | Water Levels Rise in Pune’s Dams, Offering Hope in the Midst of Water Scarcity

Pune : Pune Rains |  In a welcome relief for the residents of Pune, the city’s four major dams – Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla – have seen a significant increase in water storage in the past 24 hours. With the catchment area receiving substantial rainfall, a total of 1.04 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC) of water has accumulated, providing enough water to sustain the city for an entire month. Currently, the combined water storage in the four dams stands at 10.09 TMC, which is 34.61 percent of their total capacity.

This recent boost in water storage is a result of heavy rainfall experienced in the region. On Monday evening, the dams collectively held 9.05 TMC of water. However, due to continuous downpour throughout Monday night and Tuesday, the storage levels increased to 10.09 TMC by Tuesday evening. The past 24 hours alone witnessed the accumulation of 1.04 TMC of water, a significant milestone in securing Pune’s water supply.

Rainfall data from the dam areas indicates 75 mm in Temghar, 44 mm in Varasgaon, 48 mm in Panshet, and 9 mm in Khadakwasla from Monday night to Tuesday morning. Additionally, during the day on Tuesday, Temghar received 30 mm of rainfall, while Varasgaon and Panshet received 20 mm each, and Khadakwasla received 5 mm.

The current water storage levels in the four dams are as follows: Temghar – 0.7 TMC (21.18 percent), Varasgaon – 4.51 TMC (35.18 percent), Panshet – 3.89 TMC (36.55 percent), and Khadakwasla – 0.90 TMC (45.72 percent).

This increase in water storage brings some respite to Pune, as the city requires approximately one to one and a half TMC of water per month. With enough water accumulated to sustain the city’s needs for the next month, the water resources department reassures residents that the immediate water crisis has been averted.

The rise in water levels also bodes well for the agricultural sector and other water-dependent industries in and around Pune. Adequate water supply will not only support farming activities but also contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.
