Pune News | Wildlife Animals to be Relocated to Transit Treatment Center in Bavdhan

Pune: Pune News | In response to persistent complaints and mismanagement issues at the ‘Wildlife Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center’ located at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Museum in Katraj, the Forest Department has taken the decision to shift the wild animals to the newly established ‘Transit Treatment Center’ (TTC) in Bavdhan. The migration process is expected to be completed by August.

The rescue and rehabilitation center at Katraj came under scrutiny after two separate investigations conducted in April and June raised serious concerns about wildlife management and the treatment of the animals housed there. Reports highlighted mistreatment and a lack of proper information about the wild animals in the rescue center.

To address these issues and ensure better care for the animals, the Forest Department decided to outsource the management of the rescue and rehabilitation center to the Indian Herpetological Society (IHS). However, the society had discontinued its services long ago, leaving the center in a state of disarray. The lack of proper management became a major issue, prompting the Forest Department to take decisive action.

To fill this void, the Forest Department established a new facility known as the “TTC” in Bavdhan. This center is equipped to treat and care for wild animals, including those requiring long-term care and rehabilitation. Three NGOs expressed interest in running the new facility, and interviews were conducted to finalize the most suitable candidate. A decision regarding the appointed NGO will be made in the first week of August, and the selected organization will be responsible for running the center for at least a decade, ensuring consistency and continuity in animal care.

Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mahadev Mohite, affirmed the department’s commitment to the well-being and proper treatment of the rescued animals. He explained that the department is currently finalizing the selection of the NGO to oversee the facility’s operations in Bavdhan. Once the appointment is confirmed, the process of relocating the animals from the Katraj center to the TTC will commence promptly.
