Pune News | Katraj-Kondhwa Road’s Deteriorating Condition Ignites Citizen Outcry

Pune: Pune News | The once bustling Katraj-Kondhwa road, an important arterial route in Pune, has turned into a nightmare for motorists and citizens alike due to stalled widening work and the havoc caused by monsoon-induced potholes and mud. The dreadful state of this road is leading to traffic jams and an increased risk of accidents, leaving citizens frustrated with the lack of action from the municipal administration.

Low-lying areas near Shivgoraksha Patangana, Mauli Nagar Bus Stand, and State Bank have become hotspots for troublesome puddles that are causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. The municipal authorities had initiated asphalting and siding work in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion, but the effort is currently in a partial state. In some areas, dividers installed to manage traffic flow have been haphazardly removed, contributing to more punctures and potential accidents. Citizens are voicing their concerns, claiming that the road department is not taking their grievances seriously.

The deteriorating condition of the road has led to an increase in accidents and created a significant nuisance for the approximately 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles that pass through it every hour, with a considerable number being heavy vehicles. Traffic jams caused by these vehicles add to the frustration of citizens, who are now demanding immediate repair work before any plans for widening the road.

Citizens have been promised road widening for the past five years, with political leaders praising the allocation of 200 crores from the state government to expedite land acquisition. Even inspection tours by Additional Commissioners were conducted, yet no concrete action has been taken by the administration. As citizens await the long-awaited road widening, their primary demand is urgent repair work to make the road safer and smoother.

Responding to the situation, Dhananjay Gaikwad, Deputy Engineer from the Roads Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), cited pending drainage and electrical works as obstacles to immediate repair. However, he assured the public that the department is mindful of citizens’ difficulties and pledged to address potholes promptly.

As the citizens continue to navigate through the hazardous conditions of Katraj-Kondhwa road, they hope that the municipal administration will prioritize their safety and take swift action to make the road more passable until the much-needed widening project comes to fruition.
