Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) | PMC to ensure water meter installations at commercial properties

Pune : NpNews24 Online  Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) | The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will launch a survey to cross-check whether water is being supplied to commercial properties such as lawns, halls and hotels. The properties which do not have water meters will be asked to fix them immediately. This was revealed by PMC Water Supply Department Superintending Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar.

The PMC recently demolished encroachments along the DP road in Erandwane near Mhatre bridge. The issue of water supply provided to the demolished properties came to the fore after the action. It was asked if the structures were illegal, then how legal water connections were given to them. Later, the civic chief instructed officials to scrutinize the matter.

Pawaskar said a scrutiny of water connections to the demolished properties will be done. Illegal connections will be removed. Moreover, it will be checked if hotels, lawns and marriage halls elsewhere in the city have water meters or not.

He said that they are taking details of the properties from the Property Tax Department. There are around 1.5 lakh commercial properties in the city. However, only 40,000 of them have water meters, which were installed before 20 years. Many commercial properties are in residential societies. The Property Tax Department collects water bills from commercial properties. It is being checked whether it would be possible for the Water Supply Department to collect water bills from commercial properties in the future, said Pawaskar.

Citizens from many city parts are complaining about water shortages. The PMC set up a separate helpline on March 29 for complaints regarding water supply. It has received 424 complaints till date. These complaints have not only been lodged from the suburbs but from the heart of the city and old suburbs. Around 100 complaints have been addressed. Citizens expressed displeasure that only 25 per cent complaints were solved during the peak time of summer. They alleged that the civic administration is not sensitive about serious issues.

Reacting to the allegations, Pawaskar claimed that they were working on a war footing to solve water-related issues. Delays are caused due to digging and repairs. However, civic officials are trying to sort out the problems as early as possible.
