Pune: Infant survives multi-organ failure along with COVID19

Pune: A team of expert doctors at Jehangir Hospital have treated a day-old baby with multi-organ involvement and cytokine storm due to covid-19. The baby who is now two months old doing well was battling with life for 20 days.

The baby has now recovered well due to the concerted efforts taken by the team of doctors, a statement issued on Wednesday by hospital authorities stated.

Sagar Lad, neonatologist at Jehangir Hospital, said it’s very rare that a neonate develops post-Covid multi organ dysfunction. Only 0.1 per cent babies develop cytokine storms (result of inflammatory processes in the body caused due to severe SARS-COV2), which has high mortality rates and can be fatal.

According to the hospital authorities, symptoms were because of trans-placental transmission from the mother. Dr Anshu Sethi, neonatologist at the hospital said that the baby required a high dose of IV methylprednisolone. Dr Vaman Khadilkar, paediatric endocrine consultant prescribed the baby medicines used to treat resistant and persistent hypoglycemia.

After seven days of medications and intensive support, the baby started maintaining blood sugars and was gradually weaned off the ventilator. He was discharged on Day 20.
