Pune: Assistant Police Sub-Inspector suspended in accident case, he was drunk

Pune: An Assistant Police Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been suspended for his involvement in an accident, in which a woman was seriously injured. He was drunk at the time of the incident.

A police van hit a woman riding a two-wheeler near Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi on Tuesday (June 4). The ASI was found to be drunk in the medical report. Hence, the action was taken against him.

The suspended ASI has been identified as Nagesh Bhalerao. He is posted at the Hinjawadi Police Station. Shakuntala Pandit Shelke, a resident of Mahalunge, was seriously hurt in the accident. She is being treated in a private hospital. On Tuesday, counting of votes for the Maval Lok Sabha constituency was done. A large number of police personnel were deployed there. Though not posted for bandobast, Bhalerao visited the police chowky in Balewadi.

Bhalerao was sitting in the van when his foot fell on the accelerator. The van hit the two-wheeler rider and other parked two-wheelers. One two-wheeler was badly damaged. Senior police officials deployed at the spot suspected that Bhalerao was drunk. His medical test was conducted. It has been proved that he was drunk. Sr PI Kanhaiya Thorat said that Bhalerao was suspended immediately after receiving the report.
