MLA Rahul Kul | Rahul Kul MLA’s Ambitious Water-Saving Plan: Canal Project Goes Underground

Pune : MLA Rahul Kul | In a bid to conserve water, the ambitious canal project from Khadkawasla to Loni Kalbhor is set to undergo a significant alteration as it will be constructed through a tunnel at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore. MLA Rahul Kul unveiled this innovative idea during a news conference in Yavat, with the aim of saving three TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water. Despite the high cost, Kul highlighted the immense significance of securing three TMC of water, comparing it to the volume of a dam. The proposed canal’s width will vary from 100 meters to 200 meters at different points, and a road will also be constructed alongside it, providing additional benefits. This canal project holds great promise, given the feasibility of acquiring black stone in the selected location.

In addition to the tunnel project, Kul provided updates on other water-related initiatives. The “Baby Canal” project, which has proven beneficial to Daund taluka, has been successfully lined between Mundhwa and Lonikalbhor. Efforts are also being made to address water issues at various locations, such as Khuptewadi Phata, Vijaywadi Lake, Lalgewadi, Jiregaon, and Gaikwad Mala. The Irrigation Department has agreed to undertake the lining work from Loni to Patas following a notice of infringement served by Kul. Moreover, the proposed Janai Yojana project is set to receive an expenditure fund of Rs 200 crore, and the Shirsai area intends to implement the scheme through a closed tube.

The Asian Bank has shown interest in financing three crucial projects – the tunnel project estimated at Rs 2,000 crore, the Janai Yojana project at Rs 200 crore, and the Baby Canal project at Rs 250 crore. Preliminary permission has been granted by the bank for these projects, paving the way for significant advancements in water conservation and management in the region.
