‘Menstruating women now allowed to enter Sabrimala Temple’: SC

Women have always been barred of entering into Hindu temples because of prejudices and orthodox beliefs, due to menstrual cycles of women, they are always prohibited to enter Hindu religious temples.

In an historic decision, after two consecutive important verdicts to remove orthodox mentality of Indians by SC on Section 377 and adultery, now SC has given another big verdict to preserve the rights of women to pray.

A five judge constitution bench has pronounced a verdict to remove the ban on women on their menstrual cycle to worship temples.

“Right to worship is given to all devotees and there can be no discrimination on the basis of gender”, Chief Justice Dipak Misra said.

This decision will highly impact the discrimination against women, and such superstitious beliefs against gender inequality and women can also pray to god like other men in India.

In the month of August, a petition against this belief was filed and presented in court, and this battle against such misbeliefs is started since 2006.

Women of age group 10 to 50 who go through menstrual cycles were restricted to enter Kerala based Sabramala temple.

In year 1965, a decision was taken by Kerala government in which women with age group of 10-50 years who went through their menstrual cycle were not allowed to enter the temple.

During this period, the high court had said that the temple has the right to decide whether to allow entering of women or not which is now cancelled by the Supreme court.

In a similar such case, after the protests by women groups on the prohibition of entry to Ahmednagar situated Shani Shingapur temple, they were finally allowed to enter the temple after a long term agitation.
