Man sends money to sister who ‘needed’ money; Cyber crooks cheat him of ₹1.5 lakh

PUNE : NpNews24 Online  – Pune Cyber Crime News | A man received a WhatsApp message from his sister staying in the US informing him that she was facing financial problems. He refused to give money and she became upset. He thought that his sister may not be able to tell him about her problem and sent her money. It has come to light that cyber thieves created a fake profile by using his sister’s photo as DP and cheated him of ₹1.5 lakh. (Pune Cyber Crime News)

 

A 47-year-old man staying in Deccan area has lodged a complaint (75/23) at the Deccan police station. The incident took place from April 28 to May 1, 2023.

 

According to the police, the complainant is a businessman and his sister is staying in the US after marriage. He received a message from his sister on WhatsApp saying that she needed money. She did not mention why she needed money. The complainant did not reply to the message. He expressed his inability to send a big amount. She asked him not to send the money if cannot do so. He thought that his sister may be upset and thought that his sister may not be able to discuss her problem.

 

He sent ₹1.5 lakh to the number via GooglePay. Later, when he contacted her sister, she told him she had never asked for money and the number did not belong to her. When he realised that he had been cheated, he lodged a complaint. Sr PI Sandipan Pawar is probing the case.
