Major Kaustubh Rane’s Courage and Legacy will live on

Major Kaustubh Rane, he was only 29 when he made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. Locals sprinkled flowers on Mira road area, Mumbai as the convoy carrying mortal remains of Major Kaustubh Prakash Kumar Rane passes through. People had gathered in a huge mass to pay last gratitude to the brave martyr. Rane lost his life in Gurez Sector of J&K on August 7.

He leaves behind a two year old son. If the national flag should fly half-mast, it should be for him and his colleagues.

Major Kaustubh Prakash Rane was the son of Mira Road. He had his posting in Kolkata where he was living with his wife Kanika and son. His wife returned to Mumbai when Kaustubh got his transfer to Srinagar. Major Rane was belonged to a middle class family. His father Prakash Rane was working in a private company and his mother Jyoti Rane is a teacher.

Shops remained closed on Wednesday with banners strung all over saluting him and the sacrifice he made. He lived on first floor of Hiral Sagar building of Mira Road.

The major’s body was flown to Mumbai from Srinagar on Wednesday evening and kept in Malad for the night. The funeral was done as scheduled for Thursday morning. Local residents in Mira Road area flocked to Sheetal Nagar to offer their condolences. His wife, Kanika, however, remained inside with her two-and-a-half-year-old son Agastya grieving for her husband. “Agastya does not understand anything. He saw his father very rarely,” said Jabalpur-based father-in-law H L Manekar.
