Maharashtra Govt must file FIR against Megha Sharma OR face NOTA vote in (Lok Sabha) elections – SIFF gives ultimatum

CCTV footage in a posh apartment at Mumbai showed a young woman was assaulting the security guard at the premises of the apartment. Alok Singh, this security guard was doing his duty and he was assaulted just because he refused to get cigarettes for drunk Megha Sharma and had replied her back, when she confronted him for not obliging her.

It is clear that the woman assaulted the guard multiple times. Yet, the Mumbai police filed FIR against the victim, the guard Alok Singh. Megha Sharma, the person committing the assault is presumed a victim by police and Government and no FIR was filed against her because she is a woman.

SIFF President Rajesh Vakharia:

Since when it has become legal and constitutional in India for women to assault men? Now, this violent woman has the audacity to demand action against the victim of her assault. She has even tweeted to Mumbai police and the Chief Minister playing victim card and asking action against the innocent security guard.

The question is, “What the hell is going on here? Why no FIR is filed against Megha Sharma? If we all see the CCTV video of a man assaulting and slapping a woman doing her duty, will we react the same way?”

Now that the matter has become a big news, the choice for the Maharashtra Govt is to show some spine and do what a Government is expected to do. The Government must immediately make the police file FIR against Megha Sharma and start investigation for assaulting a security guard.

If the BJP Government at the state does not do its duty and sends a signal that it is legal for women to assault security guards, auto rickshaw drivers, cab drivers and other ordinary men like husband and boyfriends, then it must prepare to face NOTA (None of the Above) vote in next Lok Sabha elections in April, 2019.

SIFF activists campaigned for NOTA vote in Karnataka state elections, where BJP lost by a whisker and they are planning to do the same for Lok Sabha elections as well.

Men’s activists have traditionally campaigned against Congress Party for ignoring men’s issues and they had overwhelmingly supported BJP in 2014 elections. However, with BJP proving to be no way different from Congress, they want to teach BJP a lesson in elections now.

Anil Kumar, SIFF co-founder says:

“Does BJP Government at State and Center think that Men are 2nd Class citizens? They must not forget that they are denying experiences of millions of poor auto rickshaw drivers, cab drivers, laborers and security guards and they are putting these men in the risk of assault (by women) and fake molestation or #MeToo cases.”

The security guard Alok Singh is at least lucky that there is CCTV footage. Even then, FIR is filed against him and he is at a risk of becoming bankrupt running around our insensitive courts for years paying his legal expenses.

Every single day, more than 200 male victims call helplines run by SIFF and other men’s rights organizations.

Dangerous signal to the society:

This particular issue is not just about one incident involving this young woman Megha Sharma. The question is, “what kind of signal is the Govt and the police sending to the society? Is it conveying that it is okay and legal for a woman to assault a man and get away with it? Such dangerous examples must not be set for the society, when more and more wayward women take this Megha Sharma as a role model and start being violent at ordinary helpless men. This is a perfect recipe for a social disaster.

Millions of people of India have seen CCTV footages of what happened. It’s time for Govt to ensure that police does its work and files FIR against the woman for assaulting a security guard and for breach of peace.

BJP Government at Maharashtra and at Center must stop vote bank politics around women immediately. No woman will like her brother or her father to be assaulted by another woman like this. No woman will take it lightly when her male relatives are assaulted and then implicated in false cases of #MeToo.

While BJP Government is trying to show itself as a champion of women with issues like Triple Talaq, when it comes to men facing family violence in marriage, it thinks women have a right to assault their husbands. Needless to say, even here the FIR is filed against the innocent husband, not the wife who assaults the husband.

In next 2 years, 1.7 crore young men will get married. It will be a political disaster for BJP, if these men and their old parents soon realize that they are signing up for assault (by wife or daughter-in-law) and subsequent fake cases if they protest.

Started in 2005, SIFF enabled creation of 20 men’s NGO in India and every day 200 male victims call its helpline numbers. It is the largest men’s organisation in India. Recently, it launched a missed call number for men facing fake #MeToo blackmail cases. It is 9278 978 978. Men’s activists fielded a candidate in BTM Layout constituency in Karnataka State Assembly Elections. They intend to field 5 candidates in Delhi State Assembly Elections next year.

In a survey among male victims in Facebook, 70% have voted NOTA, while 25% have voted for BJP and 4% for Congress. In India, men are excluded from protection under domestic violence, sexual harassment at workplace, stalking and rape laws. This needs to change immediately.
