Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari approaches Supreme Court, ‘This’ is the whole matter

New Delhi : Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has moved the Supreme Court against the Uttarakhand High Court order. The Uttarakhand High Court had issued contempt notices against Maharashtra Governor and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari for defaulting on rent and other facilities worth about Rs 47 lakh. The court also directed Koshyari to reply to the notice within four weeks.

Koshyari has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. He has challenged in the Supreme Court the decision of the Uttarakhand court to charge exorbitant rent for a government residence. Bhagat Singh Koshyari has sought interim relief in the contempt notice issued by the High Court.

What’s the matter?
The Rural Litigation and Entitlement Center had filed a PIL against Koshyari in the Uttarakhand High Court. During the hearing, the Uttarakhand High Court had last year ordered former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari to pay the arrears within six months in exchange for government accommodation and other facilities. However, Koshyari did not pay the arrears as per the court order. The High Court had therefore issued a notice against him.

Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Bhagat Singh Koshyari is currently the Governor of Maharashtra. He has raised the issue of exempting the governor from legal action in the petition. The waiver granted to the Governor by a court suit under Article 361 of the Constitution may be disregarded while serving a criminal contempt notice. Koshyari said that the fare has been fixed by increasing it a lot. We were not even given a chance to make a statement before making this decision. Koshyari has challenged the High Court order dated May 3, 2019.
