American President Donald Trump gave India the status of Strategic Trade Authorization-1 (STA-1). Before India, this status was only given to Japan and South Korea in Asia. After receiving this status, the defense and security sector for India has paved the way for the acquisition of high-technology product sales from the United States.

India gets STA-1 status from the United States, it is seen as an answer given to China. China has been annihilating India’s entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) since last two years. China has the logic that unless India signs the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), it should not be a member of NSG.

India’s ambassador to the United States, Navtej Singh Sarna said, “It is a sign of trust, not only in the relationship but also (in) Indian’s capabilities as an economy and as a security partner, because it also presupposes that India has the multilateral export control regime in place which would allow the transfer of more sensitive defence technologies,” he said.

What is STA-1 Status?

STA allows for license exception with regards to exports from the US. This type of US government authorisation allows a certain item to be exported under defined conditions without a transaction-specific license.

Former President Barack Obama had conditioned that the status of STA-1 to any country will be given only when it is a member of the four main organizations – NSG, Missile Technology Control Regiment (MTCR), Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) and Australia Group (AG).

Trump regime has relaxed the pre-rule to give India STA-1 status while India is a member of the other three organizations other than the NSG. After efforts to achieve the membership of the NSG in the last few months of the Obama administration, India asked the US to allow STA-1 terms.

Notification has said that India is a major conservation collaborator in the US. India is already a member of MTCR, WA and AG Group. Therefore it can be given status of STA-1. After getting this status, India’s fears have increased in the rest of the world including China. Israel, which is also close to the United States, has not been granted STA-1 status, as it is not a member of the four key organizations.
