The whole process was carried out by the consortium of SKA which consists of 19-20 organizations, research institutes, universities, colleges, scientists and engineers.

According to the team of NCRA, the ‘telescope will be able to generate 300 Petabytes of data and about 3 lakh Terabyte of data could be stored. This telescope will be 30-50 times larger than their own GMRT (Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope) which generates a data of 100-150 Terabytes which is said to be 5 times powerful than GMRT.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Persistent were the main companies from India to carry this design out, these companies were specially been selected during a screening process carried out by NCRA.

The SKA (Square Kilometer Array) is a large multi radio telescope project built in South Africa and Australia. The meeting held in Manchester was for three days and India took the initiative of carrying out the whole design process. The completion of Phase 1 of the construction is just the 10% of the full SKA.

The construction of the telescope is supposed to be completed by 2025. This telescope will be 10 times better than GRMT. This telescope will have the highest of resolution.

According to TM Consortium Lead Prof. Yashwant Gupta, “sensitivity of telescope depends on how much signal it can collect. GMRT collects 30,000 km range data whereas SKA collects 1 million sq. meters.”

He said that “The major challenge carrying out the process was the diversity in workers and bringing them together, overcoming all the issues. But, we had a team for each department and also our international team which has made this day come true. “

While Maurizio Miccolis, TM Project Manager foe the SKA Organization said, “The work done by the TM consortium has been outstanding and we can now take it forward into the next phase of the SKA, which brings us one step closer to begin construction. “

The total money spent on the project is about 100 million euros in design phase 1 in the total of 700 million euros given to us. Indian government has given about 30 crores for this project out of which 4 million has been used.

There are many PhD students , engineering students and scientists involved in this project.
