IND vs ENG: India lost by 227 runs in first test in Chennai

Team India suffered its first home defeat in nearly four years when the side faced a 227-run loss to England in the first Test of the four-match series in Chennai. The last time India lost at home was in February 2017, when Australia beat the side by 333 runs in Pune.

This loss is Kohli’s fourth in succession as the captain of the side. Virat Kohli returned to the Indian team as captain after Ajinkya Rahane led the side to an incredible series win against Australia.

England took a lead of 241 runs, bundling India out for 337 in their first innings, England then set a target of 420 runs to win in front of India in the end, in response to which the Indian team was shattered. Chasing 420 on the final day of the match, the Indian team collapsed for just 192 runs and England took a lead of 1.0 in the four-match Test series.

India will take the field for the second Test which will be played at the same venue from February 13.

It also brings an end to India’s eight-match winning run in home Tests. This was also India’s first defeat against England at Chennai in 35 years, during which five Tests were played.
