In-laws responsible for widowed daughter-in-law: High Court

Nagpur: Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court observed that in-laws are responsible for their widowed daughter-in-law and should take full responsibility in case their son’s property had been given to them. The decision was pronounced by High Court judges Atul Chandurkar and Nitin Suryavanshi.

According to the information received, Megha and Amol were married on May 3, 2007. Amol died in an accident on February 21, 2008. After the accident, Amol’s parents received a sum of Rs 42,98,000 in insurance, gratuity and some other benefits. However, his parents denied taking any responsibility of Megha.

Megha filed a petition seeking Rs 10,000 alimony per month. After examining all the evidence, the court gave the above important decision and sanctioned alimony of Rs. 7,500 per month. Therefore, according to the Hindu Inheritance Act, it is the responsibility of the father-in-law and mother-in-law to take care of the widowed daughter-in-law, the court ruled.
