Dramatical growth in consumption of ‘e-cigarette’ among teens in US

US: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- Recently, US Surgeon General declared youth vaping an epidemic and called out e-cigarette giant ‘Juul’ as part of the problem in an advisory. They also declared it isn’t a new policy or enforcement action against vape companies or retailers but action against it is needed as teen vaping is sky-rocking at the current moment.

Surgeon General Jerome Adams’ advisory laid out why teen vaping is a public health concern and explained nicotine can mess with the developing brain as it’s addictive and the chemicals in e-cigarette vapor may be unhealthy to inhale.

The advisory surge also added that teen vaping “has been fuelled by new types of e-cigarettes that have recently entered the market,” and called out vape giant ‘Juul’ for its high nicotine doses.

According to a report, 45,000 students across the country, said this was the largest single-year increase in its 44-year history, surpassing a surge in marijuana smoking in the 1970s. it also added that among 8th grade students, nicotine vaping increased from 3.5% to 6.1% whereas among 10th grade students rose from 8% to 16%

Overall for students from 9-12 grades, the increases mean at least 1.3 million additional teenagers who vaped whereas, Marijuana vaping is also increasing.

Survey reporter added, “Vaping is reversing hard-fought declines in the number of adolescents who use nicotine. These results suggest that vaping is leading youth into nicotine use and nicotine addiction, not away from it.”

Experts blame newer versions of e-cigarettes, some of them looking like USB drivers, that can be used discreetly, and the many flavourings available.

On the other side, last month, ‘Juul’ Labs agreed to temporarily stop sales of certain flavours in the US to curb teenage use. The company also shut down its Instagram and Facebook social media channels.
