Army commemorates birth centenary of 1971 War hero

NPnews24 Online Jodhpur: As a befitting tribute to Late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, Padma Bhushan, Param Vishisht Seva Medal who was a key architect in the liberation of Bangladesh, His highness Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur and Lieutenant General SK Saini, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarter Southern Command l, unveiled the bust sculpture of Late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh at Jal Vatika Jodhpur Military Station recently.

Subsequently renaming of Konark Sports Stadium as ‘Sagat Singh Stadium’ was announced. In yet another splendid activity of display of unstinted support for our war heroes, Lieutenant General VS Sreenivas, Vishisht Seva Medal and Bar, General Officer Commanding Konark Corps renamed the road stretch between Defence Laboratory and Konark Circle as ‘Sagat Singh Marg’.

A seminar exclusively to commemorate and showcase the General’s illustrious military career and derive important military lessons was organised at Konark Corps, which was attended by Lieutenant General SK Saini as well as a number of imminent personalities from academia besides renowned strategic and military experts.

Maharaja Gaj Singh also graced the occasion. Multiple sessions were conducted during the panel discussion on ‘Military Legacy of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh’.

The discussions were articulated on sub themes based on Liberation of Goa, Counter Insurgency operations in North East India in 1968-69, Operations of Nathu La & Cho La in 1967 and Bangladesh Liberation War 1971. The panel derived a number of valuable Military lessons from the discussions held, which will undoubtedly enthuse the young Military leaders of today, to imbibe these exemplary leadership skills of the legendary General.

A commemorative ceremony in honour of Late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh was also held at Mehrangarh.

The event was a tribute to the General and his contributions to the nation as well as to Rajasthan. The centenary celebrations will culminate with the conduct of a ‘Veterans Rally’.
