Another Corruption Case Filed Against Former Pak PM Nawaz Sharif

Lahore : Pakistan’s anti-corruption body has filed a corruption case in Lahore’s accountability court against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Jang/Geo Media Group owner Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman and two others in a land related case.The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case after getting approval from its Chief Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal.

Two other suspects in the case are Humayun Faiz Rasool, former director of Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Mian Bashir, former director. The accountability court has issued notices to all the defendants for 29 June. It is alleged that in 1986 when Sharif was the Chief Minister of Punjab, he violated the rules and allotted 54 Canals of land in Lahore to Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman.

Rahman was arrested by the NAB on March 12, after which he is on judicial remand. Sharif and two LDA officials are accused of misusing the post to allot precious land near the canal to Rahman in violation of the rules.

Sharif has not responded to any summons and questions from the NAB, so an arrest warrant was issued against him and the bureau announced to approach the accountability court to declare him a declared criminal.

Sharif, a three-time Prime Minister, went to London in November. The Lahore High Court allowed him to go abroad for four weeks for treatment. He was granted bail in the Aj-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving a seven-year jail sentence at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

He was also granted bail in a money laundering case for going abroad. Sharif was found suffering from severe heart disease. Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz had said that her father has postponed her surgery due to the Coronavirus global epidemic, as her father is a high-risk patient.
