This year, Eid ul-Adha would commence in India on August 21, and the celebration continues for the three days.

The Governor of Maharashtra, Vidyasagar Rao has greeted the people of Maharashtra on the occasion of Bakri Eid. In his message, the Governor has said:

“Bakri Eid reminds us of eternal values like sacrifice, faith, and devotion. This festival has upheld the lofty thought of the welfare of the poor and the underprivileged. May the festival bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to all. I extend my heartiest greetings to all the people of Maharashtra, especially to Muslim brothers and sisters, on the happy occasion of Bakri Eid.”

Eid al-Adha is the big day in the Islamic calendar and is focused around the sacrifice by Ibrahim. In Islamic scripture, the Prophet was challenged by the God to prove his faith in Him and to do that, the Prophet had to sacrifice something that he held very dear to him. The Prophet’s devoted faith in God had prompted him to offer his 13-year-old son, Ismail, for sacrifice.

Obeying the word of god, Abraham was about to kill his son but his son was replaced with a goat and it got sacrificed in his stead. Since then the day has utmost importance as a festival by sacrificing a male animal (sheep or a goat) on the final day which is feasted upon. This animal is gifted to the friends and family, distributed among the poor while some cook it at home. The distribution is made to ensure that no one is left without the opportunity to partake the meat.
