1,821 cops from Pune rural police receive jabs

PUNE: Out of 2,600 policemen in Pune rural police, 1,821 cops have been vaccinated against the deadly coronavirus. So far, 345 police personnel have been infected with the virus.

The number includes 43 high ranking officers. In this, six policemen have lost their lives and 332 have recovered from the Covid-19 virus, Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Dr Abhinav Deshmukh said on Wednesday. Deputy Superintendent of Police Amrit Deshmukh and other officials were present during the press briefing by Pune rural police.

About 80 per cent of the total police force from Pune rural police has been vaccinated amid sudden spike in coronavirus cases.

Meanwhile, Pune rural police have taken stern action against those not wearing masks. About 2.22 lakh citizens have been fined and the police recovered a sum of Rs 2.92 crore.

The state reported a massive surge in Covid-19 cases on Wednesday with 9,855 people testing positive for the novel coronavirus in a day. This is the highest single-day number since October 17 last year. With this sudden huge spike in fresh cases, Maharashtra’s Covid-19 tally went up to 2,179,185 on Wednesday, as per data updated by the State Health Department.

Meanwhile, several other states have made it mandatory for travellers from Maharashtra to carry a negative Covid-19 report. The other states that are witnessing a resurgence of coronavirus include Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
