Yogi govt plans to develop Asia’s biggest Airport with 6 runways

New Delhi : Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh govt plans to develop Jewar Airport as Asia’s biggest airport. The state govt has proposed to set aside Rs 2,000 crore for Jewar Airport, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna said Monday while presenting Rs 5,50,270.78 crore budget for 2021-22 in the State Assembly. The state govt has also increased the number of runways of the Jewar Aiport to six, which was earlier decided two.

The UP government presented its first paperless budget in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday (February 22). This is the fifth budget of the present government in the state before the UP Assembly elections due early next year.

The need for Jewar airport was felt as Delhi airport is expected to achieve 100 million capacity between 2021 and 2023, reaching saturation point. It will be the third airport in Delhi NCR after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and Ghaziabad’s Hindon airport. The airport is slated to be spread over a total of 5,000 hectares.

According to officials, the first phase of the airport will cost Rs 4,588 crore and is expected to be completed by 2023. From a location point of view, the airport has some obvious advantages as it will be just 130 km away from Agra and about 72 km from Delhi, 28 km from Greater Noida and about 40 km from Noida. Zurich Airport International AG was earlier selected as the concessionaire for developing the Noida International Airport at Jewar. The first phase of the airport will be spread over 1,334 hectares and would cost Rs 4,588 crores.
