Why India celebrates Children’s day on November 14 ?

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – Children’s Day is celebrated on November 14. This year marks the 129th birth anniversary of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru affably called Chacha Nehru. This day is also known as Bal Diwas.

After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, it was decided to celebrate his birthday or November 14 as Children’s Day in India. Nehru is often cited as saying that children should always be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.

India started celebrating Children’s Day in 1959. Initially, it was celebrated on November 20 along with other countries. But after Nehru’s death in 1964, it was unanimously decided to celebrate his birthday as Children’s Day.

The United Nations Universal Children’s Day, however, still celebrates on November 20 worldwide each year to promote peace, togetherness and awareness among kids.

Pandit Nehru was fond of kids and used to meet them with affection. It was because of his special affection towards children that people started calling him ‘Chacha Nehru’.

Nehru was a very strong advocate of the importance of education when it came to children. He was involved in establishing All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Indian Institutes of Management and the National Institutes of Technology.

Being the first prime minister of India, Chacha Nehru made the best possible efforts to bring positive changes that India needed to see in terms of the growth, nourishment and development of children and youths.

He even added the five years plan which included free primary education for children. He introduced a plan of building thousands of schools and also brought in a scheme to distribute free meals including milk to school children.

Search engine Google is celebrating Children’s Day with a Doodle on its homepage. The Doodle shows a child looking at sky dotted with stars with a telescope. This year’s theme for Children’s Day was ‘What Inspires You’. A Mumbai-based student won this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition.
