WHO Praises Successful Efforts of Mumbai’s ‘Dharavi Model’ in Breaking COVID-19 Transmission Chain

New Delhi : The World Health Organization has praised Mumbai’s ‘Dharavi model’ in front of the world. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has praised the efforts to eliminate the coronavirus infection in Dharavi, Mumbai. Dharavi, identified as Asia’s largest slum, was in bad shape, but the situation there has been controlled.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Italy, Spain, South Korea and Dharavi have shown that the virus can be controlled by aggressive action.

Tedros said, “Cases have more than doubled in the last six weeks. There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought under control and some of these examples are Italy, Spain and South Korea, and even Dharavi, a densely populated area of Mumbai. ”

He continued, “Community engagement and testing, tracing, isolation, and treating all those who are ill are most necessary to breaking the transmission chain and suppressing the virus.”

With this, the WHO reported that in the last 24 hours, 2,28,102 new cases of COVID-19 in the world have been reported so far. The most cases are from the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa. At the same time, the maximum number of cases came in one day on July 4.

On the other hand, after receiving praise from the WHO, the state environment minister Aditya Thackeray tweeted, “This is huge for our very own Dharavi that has chased the virus. State Govt and @mybmc teams, along with NGOs, Elected Representatives and most importantly, Dharavikars! Let’s keep this going! Thank you @WHO for recognising their efforts, and will keep going on.”
