West Bengal : 2016 History repeated; Another Flyover in Majerhat collapses

The tragedy of 2016 repeated itself! After 2016 massive flyover collapse, another such incident took place in West Bengal. In a tragic incident yet another, flyover in Kolkata collapsed this afternoon.

The incident took place in the Majerhat area of south Kolkata which is one of the most crowded places in Kolkata. A section of the bridge collapsed creating panic and the chaotic situation on Tuesday evening. 5 to 6 feared were trapped under-beneath and many are injured. The injured were rushed to the hospital.

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee who is on a trip to Darjeeling said, “First priority is relief and rescue, prior to which investigation will be carried out.”

Governor of West Bengal said, “The Bridge required maintenance. Lack of maintenance caused this tragedy. It was under the railway administration to take care of the maintenance of the bridge. The matter requires investigation.”

Mamata Banerjee who is in Darjeeling now showed her concern regarding this case. She said she wants to come back immediately and since there are no flights in the evening, which is causing delay.

Personnel including rescue teams and brigade officials were sent to the spot. Operations by the personnel are being carried out to rescue the victims. Huge cranes have rushed to the spot and the rescue operations are being carried out.

2016 History:

On 31 March 2016, despite several warnings a similar tragedy took place in which more than 80 people were injured and many died. The incident took place in Burrabazar area, Shivpur. Vehicles, pedestrians, and many people were trapped under the bridge. The rescue operation was carried out for days. This incident had triggered a state of shock in West Bengal.

Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee reached and inspected the spot herself. The government of West Bengal was questioned by the citizens of Kolkata about such a major negligence which took lives of many. The people criticized West Bengal government for its failure in maintenance.

Prime Minister Modi had criticized Mamata Banerjee for her negligence quoting, “Now, the bridge collapsed, tomorrow she will finish off the entire Bengal.”
