Wearing nightie on day time will be fined with 2000 in this village

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – Women are equal to men, this male dominating society culture must come to end, MeToo is the way to teach men a lesson these are the statements we all hear a lot from every one in the society now a days. But just when we starts believing that men has started treating women equally something drastic come up.

For the past nine months, women in a village in AP’s West Godavari district have stopped wearing the innocuous, flowing ‘nightie’ during the day. Thanks to a diktat by the village elders who decided that nighties are meant only for night.

The nine-member committee of elders of Tokalapalli village even have a carrot-andstick strategy in place to ensure none of the 1,800-odd women disobey their diktat.

Any woman found wearing a nightie between 7am and 7pm is fined Rs 2,000 and anyone who snitches on such women is given a Rs 1,000 reward.

In fact, with the fine imposition, the elders of the village also introduced a prize of Rs 1,000 for all those who report about women neglecting the rule.

Reportedly, the fine collected will be used for the development of the village, which comprises of 11,000 families and has a population of 36,000 people.

Shockingly when the village Tehsildar and police sub-inspector visited the area to analyse the situation, none of the women came out to oppose the decision.

They also said that they had been told not to tell government officials anything. Tokalapalli sarpanch Fantasia Mahalakshmi told that washing clothes in the open, going to grocery shops and attending meetings in a nightie “is not good”.

She maintained that some women had approached elders for a ban. She denied imposing ban or threatening social boycott of women who violated the rule.

In fact, some said even claimed that no fine was imposed against women and that the decision to not wear a nightgown during the daytime was a collective decision made by all women in the village.

They even ridiculed the news saying it was a rumour and claimed that they are happy to follow rules created by all the women.
