‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ Movement: 60 years of cleaning done in four years- PM Narendra Modi

The Prime Minister  Narendra Modi launched Swachhata Hi Seva movement on Saturday. In this cleanliness campaign held in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ”The cleanliness of country, which was pending since 60-70 years, has been done in last 4 years, this was proved during the cleanliness campaign and every citizen supported it which commenced four years ago said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As part of an elaborate launch event for this fortnight-long movement, the Prime Minister will interact with a cross-section of people from 18 locations across the country, via video conferencing. The people with whom PM will interact include school-children, jawans, spiritual leaders, members of milk and agricultural cooperatives, media persons, local government representatives, railway employees, Self Help Groups, and Swachhagrahis, among others.

The Swachhata Hi Seva movement, which aims at generating greater public participation towards Swachhta, is being organized in the run-up to the fourth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, on October 2nd, 2018, which will also mark the commencement of the 150th year celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi.

Earlier, describing this movement as “a great way to pay tribute to Bapu,” the Prime Minister, in a video message to the people, had exhorted people to be “part of this movement and strengthen the efforts to create a Swachh Bharat.”

Narendra Modi had a video conference with Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, Industrialist Ratan Tata, and Guru Jaggi Vasudev and with the general public during the campaign. Every citizen has supported the cleanliness campaign which was started in the last four years. The cleanliness of country which was at 40 percent only now reached 90 percent. The cleaning which was not done in last 60-70 years, was done only in 4 years, said Modi

Many districts including union territories have now become open defecation free. India will now become clean not only by making toilets but cleanliness should be a habit, said Narendra Modi. Narendra Modi thanked Amitabh Bachchan and Ratan Tata for their co-operation with cleanliness campaign.

Further, he added, “Amitabh Bachchan has spread awareness of cleanliness among the people but he has contributed majorly towards social work, Narendra Modi said. Tata Trust has also contributed to this campaign.

“Cleanliness campaign succeeded only because of participation of the citizens. According to the World Health Organization report, cleanliness campaign has saved lives of 3 lakh people”, Narendra Modi said.
