Sharjeel Imam Accused Of Delhi Riots Arrested, Action Taken Under UAPA

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested Sharjeel Imam, accused of Delhi violence and a PhD student in JNU. The Special Cell of Delhi Police has taken this action under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Sharjeel Imam was brought from Assam to Delhi on a production warrant on Sunday. Sharjeel Imam was charged with treason in the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police in April.

Significantly, Sharjeel Imam is accused of inciting people to participate in activities that damage the integrity and sovereignty of the country during the Delhi violence. He is accused of openly insulting the country’s constitution and calling it a fascist document. Before being brought to Delhi, Sharjeel was locked in a jail in Guwahati for making inflammatory speeches. A team from Delhi Police’s Special Cell reached Guwahati in July. Before being brought to Delhi, his corona test was done which turned out to be positive. However, the special cell team returned to Delhi after Sharjeel was found to be Corona positive.

After he was cured from corona infection, the Delhi Police has now brought him from Assam to Delhi. The Delhi Police wanted him on remand for questioning on conspiracy charges and funding in the Delhi violence case. Sharjeel is alleged to have spoken of separating Assam from the rest of the country in his speech. After which he has been accused of criminal conspiracy, sedition and promoting differences among people on the basis of religion. Delhi Police registered a case under 124A, 153A and 505.
