Scotland Soon to End ‘PERIOD POVERTY’, First Nation to Make Pads & Tampons FREE

Npnews24online – Scottish parliament approved on Tuesday the first stage of the plan to give menstruation products completely free; which according to them can help end “period poverty” by providing free tampons and pads for those in need. Free menstrual products are already available to students in high schools, colleges and universities in Scotland. And a bill passed by the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday will make pads and tampons free across the board.

Monica Lennon, the lawmaker who submitted the draft proposal of the bill, said she was thrilled that it had attracted support across Scotland, including from civic groups and individuals who have had their own lived experience of period poverty and know what it is like not to have access to products when they need them.

The bill now moves to the second stage, where members of the Scottish parliament can propose amendments before it is given final consideration in stage three. The bill aims to tackle period poverty, stigma around menstruation and the impact that periods have on education.
