‘Say no to online medicines’: Nation wide protest by AIOCD

Under the name of digital India, online sale of medicines has imposed a question mark not only on the health of the patients but also the employment rates of the pharmaceutical retailers and shopkeepers.

To protest against such selling of medicines online, a nationwide strike is being observed by the All India Chemists and Druggists Association(AIOCD) on Friday, 28 September. The strike will be observed from 27 September midnight to 28 September midnight.

All the medical shops will be shutdown during this duration in order to agitate against illegal sale of medicines online.

The online players are not only selling medicines illegally online, but providing discounts on medicines which is hampering the real markets of medicines.

Vaijanath Jagushte, Joint secretary of AIOCD said, “We are expecting the government to take action after this protest as last time also government supported us. And, if no action is been taken, we will aggregate the protest.

He added, “We are thankful to RSS for supporting us in the protest, and we are doing our best to make the people aware about the side effects of online medicines. What is the use of doctors if the patients can prescribe medicines fro their problems and cure themselves? Such practice should immediately stopped.”

Rajiv Singha, Hon Gen Secretary of AIOCD said, “In spite of all democratic measures Central Govt. went ahead with its agenda without considering concerns, particularly possible ill effect on health of general public and youth of country.

Under the proposal made by the AIOCD, which includes complete ban on the online sale of medicines and are demanding complete shut down of the online selling of medicines.

Allegations by AIOCD:

1. 8.5 lakh chemists and 50 lakh dependents working in chemists shops and families may lose their livelihood.
2. Fake prescriptions are been generated by patients and the online sellers are selling such medicines.
3.  Security of the data of patients is lacking in online nowadays which is important.
4. The drugs like MTP Kits, Sildenafil, Tadalafil, habit forming drugs like codeine are sold  without prescription.
5. Online advertisements by players violates provisions of section 18(C) of the Drug Act which prohibits sale or distribution or stock or exhibit or offer for sale any drug without a license.

The strike will be observed nationwide, main motive behind which is creating awareness among the people.
