This new state of the art service is the brainchild of Superintendent of Police Suhail Sharma. There is no need to dial any number, you pick up the receiver and the call will be connected directly the control room at police headquarters. It’s like a hotline, officials said.

Police officials said that this digital technology enabled facility will do away with confusion regarding which police station’s jurisdiction where the incident has taken place and also people can keep their identity a secret. Many times citizens have got information about crimes, accidents, illegal activities but they hesitate to inform police for several reasons. Most important being their identity and then they don’t have number of the police station concerned. This system will do away with all these doubts.

How this system works ?

A VoIP phone or IP phone uses voice over IP technologies for placing and transmitting telephone calls over an IP network, such as the Internet, instead of the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN).

IP Phone installed by police has been made like a hotline system. The receiver is picked up and the call connects directly to the control room at headquarters. There you can give information. After that the information will be communicated to the concerned police station. So, the action will be taken promptly on the given information.

IP phones to be installed at these locations

The new facility has been started at following places – Sangli College Corner, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pushpraj Chowk, Ram Mandir, Ganpati Temple Complex, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar garden and Marketyard in Miraj. This facility will be started at four more locations in the next one week. There will be cameras too so that phones are not stolen. The name of the caller will be kept secret, said Sangli SP Suhail Sharma.

“Many complainants do not report about accident or any crime, because they have to go to the police station for the complaint. The criminals take advantage of this. The new facility will encourage people to inform police without telling their identity”, he added.

The police control room number 100 sometimes remain busy. Therefore, helpline numbers 1090 for senior citizens and 1091 for women have been started, Sharma further informed.
