Pune rural police to deploy 3600 police personnel during Maratha protests

Superintendent of Police (Pune rural) Sandip Patil said that a heavy police bandobast will be deployed during bandh on Thursday by Maratha organizations.

The officer said that a special meeting at Chakan held to ensure bandh passes peacefully.

According to Pune rural police , a total of 2200 policemen, 900 home guards , 3 SRPF coy, 1 RAF company, 20 striking platoons have been deployed for bandobast duty.

Earlier on July 30, during bandh in Chakan a mob had turned violent. Police have registered case against 4,000 to 5,000 unidentified persons for rioting and violence. The mob had set on fire 20 vehicles and damaged 70 vehicles, besides pelting stones on police personnel and Chakan police station. They had also blocked Pune Nashik highway.

The Maratha community which forms about 33 percent of the state’s population, has been protesting for the last two decades demanding reservation in education institutes and jobs.

This year at least seven persons have killed themselves demanding the Maratha reservation in different parts of the state. Meanwhile, properties worth crores have been damaged in the protests which have often turned violent this year.

Earlier, the Maratha community organised silent rallies across the state. No political leader, no slogans and well maintained environment were notable features of the marches .

Millions of people came together to protest, from all parts of Maharashtra, but no harm was done to any public or private property.
