Pune Political News | JP’s Modi@9 campaign proves a hindrance in appointment of new Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and district chiefs

PUNE/PIMPRI : Pune Political News | The process of appointment of BJP’s city unit chief for Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune district is stuck due to the party’s all-India campaign Modi@9 which has been launched due to the competition of nine years of Narendra Modi government. There is talk among BJP’s office-bearers that if new city unit chief and district chief are appointed, it will lead to a delay in forming a working committee and this will affect the Modi@9 campaign. There is a possibility that the terms of present city unit and district chief would be extended till local body polls are conducted.

Party General Secretary Vikrant Patil had been given the responsibility of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune district. It had been decided that the opinion of office-bearers of the party will be considered instead of the leader’s choice. Accordingly, discussions had been held with members of the working committee, office-bearers, MLAs and MPs by Patil. It had been initially decided that appointments will take place by May 20. Later, due to the meeting of party’s state working committee, the appointments were delayed. The new deadline was May end. However, even after the deadline is over, the appointment of city unit chief and district president has not taken place.

BJP City Unit Chief Jagdish Mulk’s three-year tenure has ended. The names of former mayor Murlidhar Mohol, MLA Siddharth Shirole, former house leader Ganesh Bidkar, Dheeraj Ghate and formr MLA Medha Kulkarni are doing the rounds. Patil has carried out an assessment of which candidate is more suitable for the post. Leaders of assembly segments and other leaders have been consulted and the new city unit chief will be appointed considering the forthcoming elections.
Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge was appointed as new city party unit chief from January 16, 2020. His tenure ended six months ago.

Hence, the process of selecting a new party unit chief had started. Party General Secretary Vikrant Patil visited Pimpri Chinchwad. He spoke to office-bearers and party activists and submitted a report to the state party chief. However, the appointment did not take place. The party is divided over selection of new chief. There are different opinions whether new party chief should be appointed or not before civic elections. Some feel that as per party’s constitution, a new chief should be appointed and others feel that Mahesh Landge should continue as city unit chief till the elections are over. The name of Shankar Jagtap is also doing the rounds for this post.
