Pune PMRDA News | PMRDA to Update Comprehensive Transport Plan to Address Pune’s Growing Needs

Pune : Pune PMRDA News | The increasing population and inadequate transport system in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) limits have prompted the decision to update the ‘Comprehensive Transport Plan’ prepared in 2018. This crucial task will be undertaken by PMRDA, as decided in the meeting of the Pune Integrated Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA).

The previous comprehensive transport plan, formulated in 2018 by PMRDA, outlined short, medium, and long-term measures to enhance traffic flow in the Pune metropolitan area. The plan included a range of projects, such as Metro, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Monorail, Neo Metro, flyovers, and subways. Notably, PMRDA had already initiated the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar metro project based on the recommendations of this plan. Additionally, the plan proposed the construction of eight new metro lines and the development of a ring road. Once completed, these projects will establish a well-connected network of roads and services for efficient transportation within Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the rural areas.

Regular review and necessary updates to the transport plan are crucial every five years to account for the expanding urbanization and evolving transportation needs of the region. Since the plan’s formulation in 2018, significant changes have occurred in Pune’s cityscape, underscoring the pressing need for an updated transport system. Recognizing this, the PUMTA meeting emphasized the importance of urban transport planning amidst increasing urbanization. Consequently, PMRDA has received approval to prepare a comprehensive transport plan for the next five years, spanning from 2023 to 2028.

Furthermore, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Khadakwasla to Hadapsar-Kharadi metro line has been submitted for approval to the main governing body. The proposal will be reviewed and approved during the July General Assembly, after which it will be forwarded to the state government for final authorization. Once approved at the state level, the proposal will be submitted to the central government. Only upon securing central government approval will the actual construction work commence. This multistep process will be managed by Mahametro. Previously, Mahametro had prepared the DPR for the Khadakwasla-Hadapsar-Kharadi route as part of the Comprehensive Transport Plan.

The regular updates to the Comprehensive Transport Plan every five years ensure that it remains aligned with the evolving needs of the city. With the expansion of Pune over the past five years and the subsequent increase in population in both urban and rural areas, it is imperative to incorporate new projects into the plan. The decision to update the comprehensive transport plan during the PUMTA meeting highlights the commitment of PMRDA and Pune Municipal Corporation to improving the region’s transportation infrastructure.

As Pune continues to grow and evolve, an efficient and comprehensive transport system becomes increasingly vital. The updates to the transport plan will play a crucial role in addressing the transportation needs of the city’s expanding population and ensuring smooth connectivity throughout the metropolitan region.
