Pune Water Supply | Concerns Mount as Water Reserves in Khadakwasla Dams Remain Below Average

Pune : Pune Water Supply | The four dams in the Khadakwasla chain have received heavy rainfall in recent days, causing a growing sense of concern as water storage levels remain below average. Currently, the dams have accumulated 31 percent of their total water storage capacity, with a total of 9.05 billion cubic feet (TMC) of water. Comparatively, at the same time last year, the dams had accumulated 17.67 TMC of water, accounting for 61 percent of their storage capacity. This year’s water storage is lower by 8.62 TMC (28.58 percent) compared to last year.

However, according to the Meteorological Department’s forecast, the situation is expected to improve as heavy rains are predicted in the coming days. Pune city primarily relies on water supply from the Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla dams.

Among these four dams, Temghar has accumulated 0.68 TMC (18.46 percent) of water, Varasgaon has 4.09 TMC (31.90 percent), Panshet has 3.41 TMC (31.98 percent), and Khadakwasla has 0.87 TMC (43.89 percent).

This year, the monsoon arrived later than usual, with continuous rainfall observed initially. However, the rain subsequently decreased, raising concerns about the water storage levels. From Sunday night to Monday morning, only three millimeters of rain were recorded in the Khadakwasla dam area, while Temghar received 45 millimeters, Varasgaon received 25 millimeters, and Panshet received 26 millimeters.

Throughout the day, an additional 20 millimeters of rain fell in the Temghar dam area, 15 millimeters in both Varasgaon and Panshet, and two millimeters in Khadakwasla, as reported by the water resources department.

Despite the lower water storage levels, there is optimism that heavy rains in the forecast will lead to significant improvements in the dams’ water reserves. The authorities remain vigilant and are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the city’s water supply is maintained adequately.
