Pune PMC News | Only 577 beds for population of 45 lakh; Citizens deprived of treatment in civic hospitals
PUNE: Pune PMC News | Although it is the primary responsibility of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to provide health facilities to citizens, the condition of civic hospitals and facilities provided there are inadequate. Twenty-two civic hospitals have the facility to admit patients. The number of beds in all hospitals is 1,376 but only 577 beds are functional.
Of 577 functional beds, 380 beds are meant for women who get admitted for delivery and only 197 beds are available for other patients. Seven hundred and ninety nine beds are non-functional because of lack of adequate facilities. The PMC spends more than ₹500 crore every year to provide good medical facilities to citizens, but the common man does not get any benefit.
According to a report submitted by a civic department, 25 to 30 per cent citizens stay in slums. Since these people work as daily wagers, they cannot afford treatment in private hospitals. In such a situation, these citizens have to approach civic hospitals for treatment. However, due to lack of doctors and other manpower, the PMC prefers to keep these beds closed.
For common citizens, delivery facility, bone and eye treatment, dialysis and heart disease treatment is offered at concessional rates. For other serious ailments and operations, the citizens have to approach private hospitals. Considering the expenditure of the PMC on health services, it can provide all medical facilities to citizens.
However, the PMC has shied away from its responsibility under the guise of Shahari Garib Yojana. Under this scheme, the entire family is provided treatment up to ₹1 lakh and up to ₹2 lakh in case of some ailments for a year. However, the actual expenditure is ₹5 to ₹10 lakh and since these citizens cannot afford it, they have to lose their life.
