Pune News | Ram Nadi pollution! NGT directs PMC to form panel

PUNE : Pune News | The MPCB has issued a show cause notice regarding pollution of Ram Nadi in Bavdhan area and a hearing is underway in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). An order has been issued that the PMRDA and the PMC should form a panel to find a solution for the pollution. Because of the polluted river, the water in the Pashan lake has become non potable. Hence, residents of Bavdhan have to depend on water supplied by tankers.

A volunteer of AAP and a person who loves rivers, Kunal Ghare, has lodged a complaint with the NGT. A hearing was held recently and the next hearing will be held on September 9, 2023. Till then, PMRDA and PMC have been told to form a committee and carry out an inspection of Ram Nadi. NGT has issued orders that a report about action being taken by the committee should be submitted during the next hearing.

Kunal Ghare said, “I saw that sewage water was seeping into Ram Nadi at two places. I had taken photos and lodged a complaint with the MPCB. But it did not take any action. Hence, I lodged a complaint with the NGT. During the hearing, the NGT issued orders to PMRDA and PMC to form a committee and carry out an inspection. At one place, the civic body has started the work of laying a pipeline. Ram Nadi’s length is 19 km long. Half of it is in PMC limits and half is in PMRDA limits. It is our demand that the pollution should be reduced in the river.”

“Ram Nadi originates at Khatpevadi at from there it joins Pashan lake at Bavdhan. Earlier, residents of Bavdhan used to drink water from Pashan lake. However, since few years, the water is not potable. Hence, water tankers are supplying water to various housing societies in Bavdhan. Actually, 1.5 TMC water from Pashan lake can be used for drinking. But since Ram Nadi is polluted, it cannot be used for drinking. The drainage pipes are broken at many places. If these pipes are repaired and pollution is prevented, then water from Pashan lake can be used for drinking,” Ghare said.
