Pune Police News | Kondhwa Police Enforces Tenant Background Checks in Societies

Pune: Pune Police News |  In a bid to bolster security measures and curb potential criminal activities, the Kondhwa Police Station has announced that tenancy agreements will be mandatory for all societies in the area starting from July 17, 2023. Senior Police Inspector Santosh Sonawane emphasized the importance of conducting background checks on all tenants to ensure their innocence and legality.

Under Section 24 of the Maharashtra Rent Act 1999, it is obligatory for landlords to provide the details of their tenants to the local police station. Failure to comply with this requirement may lead to legal consequences, with the landlord facing charges under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Moreover, societies have been strictly advised not to permit entry to any tenant without proper police verification conducted by the Chairman and Secretary of the society. Society members who overlook this essential verification process may face legal actions and be held accountable for any consequences that arise.

To streamline the verification process, Kondhwa Police Station has urged landlords and societies to submit copies of tenancy agreements to the police station regularly whenever a new tenant is welcomed into the society. This measure ensures that no tenant remains unknown to the police and enhances the overall security of the locality.

The police authorities have also highlighted that hefty deposits are not permissible under the Maharashtra Rent Act 1999, reiterating the importance of adhering to legal guidelines for tenancy arrangements.

With the implementation of these measures, the Kondhwa Police Station aims to create a safer and more secure living environment for all residents. Cooperation from societies, house owners, and tenants in adhering to these guidelines is crucial to achieving this goal.
