Pune News | Delayed Restoration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Tests Patience of Traders

Pune : Pune News | The traders in Chhatrapati Shivaji Market in Pune are losing their patience as the market renovation has experienced a 15-day setback. Work on the project had commenced around May-June last year with an initial target completion date of June 30. While the refurbishment of the roof over the fish and chicken section is almost complete, interior tasks like wall plastering and floor tiling are still pending.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Market holds a lot of historic significance as it was constructed during the Colonial times. Now authorities from the Public Works Department (PWD) attribute the delay to the time required for procuring wood from outside Pune. Nevertheless, they assure that there is no shortage of workers, and they are actively addressing both issues to expedite the renovation process. The new expected completion date is now set for August 23, according to Anil Kakade, the PWD section officer.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Market holds significant cultural and architectural value for Pune, located at the heart of Pune Cantonment. The decision to restore this heritage building was taken with utmost care, considering its historical importance, as it dates back to 1885.

The restoration efforts began a year after a major fire incident in March 2021, which devastated nearly 25 shops in the heritage market building. The delay in starting the renovation was due to a careful assessment of its historical significance.

Local traders allege that nearly 60% of the work is yet to be completed by the authorities. They are now eagerly anticipating the revitalization of this historic landmark. As the project progresses, it is crucial for the authorities to uphold high standards of craftsmanship and conservation to preserve its original charm and historical significance.
