Pune News | PMC claims 90% Potholes Filled But Rain Brings Potholes Back to Pune’s Roads, Motorists Bear the Brunt

Pune: Pune News | Pune’s roads have turned into a nightmare for motorists as the monsoon season brings with it a slew of potholes, causing distress and inconvenience to commuters. Despite claims by the road department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) that they have filled a significant number of potholes, the ground reality paints a different picture.

According to the latest data provided by the PMC, a total of 16,747 potholes were filled between June 1 and July 26, with an additional 39 potholes addressed just on Wednesday. The road department asserts that only 446 potholes remain to be filled out of a total of 17,193. However, with potholes continuing to appear on almost every road, citizens are left questioning the effectiveness of the repair efforts.

The municipal administration had assured the public of well-maintained roads during the monsoon season this year. To achieve this, a tender of Rs 300 crore was floated for the repair and maintenance of the city’s road network. Yet, with only 48 kilometers of roads completed so far, the promises seem to fall short of reality.

The PMC’s approach to tackle the pothole issue through tenders at the field office level with allocations of Rs 2 crore each has not yielded the desired results. Citizens had hoped for some respite from the pothole menace, but the situation has only worsened with the arrival of heavy rains.

A recent viral video captured the dire state of affairs, with a contractor operating a road roller in Dhairi, amid torrential rainfall. The incident highlights the inadequacy of repairs during adverse weather conditions, exacerbating the problem.

Another concerning incident occurred in the Manikbagh area, where potholes filled with tar just a month ago were washed away due to rain, leading to severe traffic jams. The administration had to intervene and repair the road using paving blocks to alleviate the congestion.

In response to the growing public outcry, Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar held a meeting with the road department officials, urging them to address all potholes within seven days. Despite their attempts to expedite the process, many areas still suffer from potholes, raising questions about the efficacy of the efforts.

Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakane assured citizens that the PMC is committed to resolving the pothole crisis promptly. However, with the monsoon season ongoing, the urgency to complete repairs and provide relief to commuters remains a top priority.

Meanwhile, motorists continue to navigate the treacherous roads, urging the authorities to expedite repairs and ensure safer commuting conditions. The need for timely action and effective solutions has never been more crucial to ease the burden on Pune’s residents.
