Pune News | Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Implements Waste to Energy Project

Pimpri: Pune News | The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has achieved a significant milestone in waste management by successfully implementing the Waste to Energy project at the Moshi Garbage Depot. The project aims to generate electricity from dry waste (waste to energy) and use it to power municipal facilities. This move not only helps in waste disposal but also makes the municipality one of the few in the country that produces electricity from waste.

The Moshi Garbage Depot, spanning 81 acres, has been accumulating waste since 1991, resulting in massive garbage heaps. To tackle the waste issue, various methods were employed, including the production of fertilizer from wet waste and fuel from plastic waste, along with biomining to remove garbage heaps. However, to further address the disposal of dry waste, the decision to set up a power generation project was taken.

The Waste to Energy project was approved by the General Assembly on 12th April 2018 and developed on the principle of ‘Design, Build, Operate, and Transport’ (DBOT). Entori Lara Enviro and A. G. Enviro Company will operate this project under a 21-year contract. The total project cost amounts to 208 crores 36 lakhs. The municipality has also provided financial assistance of 50 crores to support the project.

The initial test run of the project has already yielded promising results, with 1.07 megawatts of electricity being generated since the beginning of July. The power generation will be scaled up in phases. Discussions are underway with the Maha distribution company to supply the electricity generated to them.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate 14 MW of electricity daily from 700 tonnes of dry waste. Out of this, the municipality will purchase 13.80 megawatts at the rate of Rs.5 per unit for 21 years. The electricity will be utilized at various municipal facilities, including the Nigdi Sector No. 23 Water Purification Center and Sewage Treatment Center. The remaining balance will be used by the electricity company to run the project.

By procuring electricity at a nominal rate, the municipality anticipates significant savings in its electricity bills, reducing expenses by approximately 35 to 40 percent. Additionally, the project will enable the disposal of 700 tonnes of dry waste daily, contributing to waste management efforts.

The Waste to Energy project represents a major step towards sustainable waste management and efficient electricity usage. The municipality aims to inaugurate this project on August 1, with the honorable presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging the remarkable strides made in waste management and clean energy production.
